Your First Brazilian: What Actually Happens, Start to Finish

The version in your head is worse than the appointment. A complete walkthrough of a first Brazilian wax, from the consent form to the rebook.

Almost nobody books their first Brazilian on a whim. By the time a first-timer walks into one of our studios, she has usually been picturing this appointment for far longer than she’ll admit, and the picture in her head is almost always worse than the next thirty minutes will be. I started SOS Wax and Skincare with a single waxing room in 2014. Today our seven Las Vegas and Henderson studios do thousands of Brazilians a month, which means walking a nervous first-timer through her first visit is something our estheticians do every single day. Here is exactly what happens, so nothing surprises you.

The worry is universal. That’s good news.

First-timers arrive with some mix of three questions: will it hurt, is my body normal, and what am I supposed to do once I’m in the room. The fear of the unknown is usually bigger than any one specific worry. A Brazilian is the most personal service on the menu, so it collects the most fear, and the most secondhand stories. Everyone knows someone with a dramatic version of their first Brazilian, and those stories grow in the retelling. The reality is a quick, professional service our estheticians perform all day long.

“Your esthetician has welcomed hundreds of first-timers, and there is nothing about you that will surprise her.”

Genet Nemeth, Founder

Before the room

Tell us it’s your first time when you book or check in, and everything slows down to your pace. You’ll fill out a short consent form so your esthetician knows your skin and history before anything starts: any medications, skin treatments, or sensitivities that matter. Then it’s a private room, one-on-one with a licensed esthetician. She’ll talk through the whole appointment before anything happens, answer every question, and check in as she works. You are in control the entire time, and nothing happens without you knowing what’s next. That conversation is where most of the nerves dissolve.

What actually happens

The area is cleansed first. Then the wax goes on in small sections, sets for a moment, and comes off quickly, section by section, with your esthetician guiding you through a few simple position changes as she works. For Brazilians we use hard wax, which wraps the hair and grips it rather than the skin, so it’s noticeably gentler where skin is delicate. She tidies any strays and finishes with post-wax care to calm the skin. Each section is over in seconds, and the whole thing moves faster than anyone expects.

Honestly? The first one stings. Each pull is a quick sting that’s over in a second or two, and there aren’t that many of them. She tells you before each pull, coaches your breathing, and you can pause whenever you want. The anticipation is almost always worse than any single moment of the service. Plan on about 30 minutes for a first visit, since we take time to talk everything through first. And here’s the part I can promise: they get quicker, because the talk-through gets shorter and the regrowth gets finer.

How to prep

The night-before checklist

  1. Let the hair grow to about a quarter inch, roughly two weeks of growth. No shaving in the two weeks before.
  2. Exfoliate gently a day or two ahead, not the day of.
  3. Arrive showered, with no lotions or oils on the area.
  4. Go easy on coffee and alcohol that day, and skip tanning for 48 hours before.
  5. If you can, book around your cycle; skin runs more sensitive then.

The full prep and aftercare rundown, including every studio policy, lives in our Know Before You Go field guide.

After, and the habit that changes everything

Give the area 24 to 48 quiet hours: no gym, pools, hot tubs, or saunas while the follicles close, stay out of the sun, and wear loose, breathable cotton. After 48 hours, start gentle exfoliation two or three times a week; it’s the single best habit against ingrown hairs. And never shave between visits, because shaving restarts the coarse regrowth cycle.

Then there’s the rhythm: four weeks. That’s the cycle the hair growth rewards. Regrowth comes in finer, the appointment gets faster and more comfortable, and rebooking within four weeks earns our Maintenance rate, roughly 30 percent off. Every visit also earns Gold Points, because you’re on The Gold List from your very first appointment, so the habit quietly pays you back twice. The easiest move is booking your next visit before you leave; same date next month, done.

If you’re still on the fence

Come anyway, and tell us you almost didn’t. The nerves you’re feeling right now are the hardest part of the whole experience; the appointment itself is quicker and easier than the version in your head. An hour from now you’ll be smooth, relieved, and honestly a little proud of yourself.
